Orchard Wassailing / 果园 'Wassailing'

Wassailing is an ancient British tradition which continues to this day. There are two kinds of wassailing, a wassailing home visit and a wassailing orchard visit. The word 'wassail' is derived from a very old Anglo-Saxon saying which means 'Be healthy'. Wassailing ceremonies generally take place on 'Twelth Night' which is the 5th or 17th of January, depending on which calander is used.
The purpose of wassailing is the awakening of trees and to scare away evil spirits. The wassailing orchard visit relates to the ancient custom of visiting orchards in cider-producing regions of England, including Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. In the orchards, participants recite incantations and sing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year.
A traditional rhyme that is sung at such events is:
Wassail the trees, that they may bear
You many a Plum and many a Pear
For more or less fruit they will bring,
As you do give them Wassailing Wassailing
Although wassailing ceremonies tend to differ somewhat from village to village, but they have the same essential elements. A wassail king and queen sing the first notes of the songs and lead the procession from orchard to orchard. The queen will be lifted into the trees and a piece of toast dipped in cider, mulled wine or punch will be tied to the tree as a gift. Sometimes cider is poured over the roots of trees. The crowd then makes as much noise as possible singing and banging pans and drums to scare away the demons. Sometimes a shotgun is fired into the trees. The procession then moves to the next orchard. Needless to say that this ceremony usually involves drinking a lot of cider.
